A.V. Undercover: Great cover of The Beach Boys "Kokomo"
April 20, 2010
Retribution Gospel Choir is a side project of Alan Sparhawk of Low, a band that has released ten or so critically-acclaimed albums over the past 15 years. Low's live show was notable, especially in their early days, for the fact that they played extremely quiet music in front of audiences that were used to big, loud rock bands. When Low played at the venue I worked at in the mid-90s, my job for the duration of their set was to approach audience members who were talking and ask them to keep their voices down. Read more...

The Swell Season, 'Strict Joy'
October 22, 2009

A beloved Chicagoland institution closed for good this past October. A small amusement park geared towards younger kids, Kiddieland has been around since 1929. I don’t think I ever went to this Melrose Park institution when I was a kid— I didn’t move to Chicago until I was nine. But this summer I went with my son Brady for the first time and we both fell in love with the place. He loved every single ride he went on— the cars, the boats, the airplanes, the train. And I loved seeing just how deliriously happy he was. He still talks about it constantly. He’ll be playing with a toy plane in my house and announce that the plane is “flying to Kiddieland.” Read more...
Digby, Nova Scotia
September 15, 2009
We just returned home from Digby, Nova Scotia where we were assigned to cover the Wharf Rat Biker Rally. Digby is a quaint and beautiful baytown where about 2,000 Canadians call home. On this particular weekend an estimated 17,000 bikers rode in from across North America to take in the many sights and deafening sounds of the Rally. We met one guy rode his motorcycle to Nova Scotia all the way from Tennessee, sleeping under bridges and bathing in rivers along the way. There was something pretty amazing about seeing Digby’s boutique laden main street completely flooded with thousands upon thousands of motorcycles.
Paris, France
April 20, 2009
We spent almost two weeks hopping through France, Germany and Poland to shoot more about the Catholicism project. The schedule was completely insane— long, long days— but the sites we saw were unbelievable. I had never been to Paris before and I can’t wait to go back. We only spent three days there and were working nonstop, so I didn’t get the chance to really explore (I know, whaaaaaah, poor me). But it was easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. From Paris we went to Chartres to film the stunning Chartres Cathedral. Then we drove up to Lisieux to do some stuff about St. Therese of Lisieux. From there we hit Colmar and Cologne in Germany, and Warsaw and Krakow in Poland. Crazy trip, but amazing.
